The 18th and 19th century saw
many invasions from Nepal keeping Sikkim at war
most of the time. In early 19th century Sikkim
became a protectorate of the British, an
arrangement which was carried on with India when
the British left and continued on the basis of
the Indo-Sikkim treaty of 1950. Over the next
two decades there were many political
developments and democratic aspirations surfaced
with the desire for ‘one-man, one vote.’ This
finally culminated with the merger of Sikkim
with India in 1975. |
