Sikkim has three main ethnic
groups. The Lepchas who call themselves the Rong-pa,
were Sikkim’s earliest inhabitants. The Bhutias
are mainly descendants of the early settlers
from Tibet and Bhutan. Members of the Namgyal
dynasty which ruled Sikkim for over 300 years
belonged to this ethnic group. The Nepali
community of Sikkim is a mix of diverse ethnic
groups. They are Sikkim’s largest community and
form over 70 per cent of the population |
